Next to the Old Bridge, there is a department of the Herzegovina Museum dedicated to the history of the development of the city of Mostar and the restoration of the Old Bridge, which operates under the name “Old Bridge Museum”.

The Old Bridge Museum with an observation deck, located in the Tara tower complex, on the left bank of the Neretva, presents the reconstruction project (1999-2004) of the bridge from the 16th century with the Tara and Halebija towers.

A single-arched stone bridge of unique beauty and vault construction, built by order of Suleiman the Magnificent from 1557-1566. by Mimar Hajrudin, and according to the project of leading Turkish builder Kodža, Mimar Sinan.

The museum creates a picture of life on and around the bridge in all its aspects from cultural/historical, architectural, economic, military to everyday life.
The specificity of the development of the old city core and the mutual interweaving of the bridge and the city are emphasized. At the same time as the reconstruction of the Old Bridge, archaeological research was carried out (2001-2003), which provided new information about the origin of the city by the bridge and two towers on the Neretva, as mentioned in the oldest record from 1452.

Excavations proved the existence of two older medieval wooden bridges. Part of the museum setting is an authentic archeological site below the level of the tower’s approach, while movable archaeological material, archival and architectural documentation are exhibited on the upper floors of the tower.
From the top of the tower there is a beautiful view of the Old Town and the surrounding area. The old town and the bridge were included in the world cultural heritage under the protection of UNESCO in 2005.
